Suzuki . How to Replace the Fuel Pump in a 1994 F150The 1994 Ford F150 pickups rely on an in-tank fuel pump to move the gasoline from the fuel tank, forward through the fuel lines, to the fuel-injection system. The pump must maintain proper fuel pressure at all times, under all throttle conditions, in order to function properly. In the event the pump should begin to leak down and lose pressure, or simply fail altogether, you will need to replace it before you can drive your F150 again. If you have basic automotive-repair skills, you can replace the fuel pump in your 1994 F150 in a few hours or less. Difficulty:Moderately Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Battery wrench Socket set Helper Rag Screwdriver Rubber mallet Step by Step : 1 Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery using the battery wrench. Move the cable end away from the battery so it cannot accidentally contact the battery during the repair. 2 Remove the four bed bolts from the floor of the truck bed with the socket set. Unbolt the fuel filler neck from the side of the bed with the socket set. 3 Lift the bed up and off the F150's frame, with your helper's assistance, and walk it straight back and off the truck. Set the bed aside. 4 Wrap the rag around the tip of the screwdriver. Place the screwdriver tip against the lip of the fuel pump retaining ring and tap the handle of the screwdriver with the rubber mallet to turn the retaining ring counterclockwise. 5 Disconnect the fuel pump wiring harness and fuel lines from the fuel pump with the screwdriver. Lift the old pump up and out of the fuel tank by hand and insert the new pump in the same position and orientation. 6 Connect the wiring harness and fuel lines to the new fuel pump in reverse of how you removed them earlier. Move the truck bed back over the frame, with assistance from your helper, making sure to guide the fuel filler neck back through the opening in the bed's sidewall. 7 Thread the bed bolts back in place by hand and tighten them with the socket set. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery with the battery wrench. Tips & Warnings Never work on a fuel system while smoking or around open flames.
Suzuki . How to Replace the Fuel Pump on a 2002 Chevy S-10The 2002 Chevy S-10 is a piece of American history today as it is no longer being made. Changing the fuel pump in your S-10 should take no more than three to four hours, even if you have never worked on a car before. The fuel pump assembly is located inside the fuel tank. The side-mounted tank has a simple design for easy removal and installation. You can find a fuel pump at your local parts store or Chevrolet dealership. Difficulty:Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need 3/8-Inch drive ratchet and socket set 2-ton jack Wheel chocks (2) Jack stands (2) Hammer Flat head screwdriver Rubber mat Can of engine parts cleaner Shop rags Heavy-duty gloves Block of wood (2-inch by 4-inch by 1-foot long) Masking tape Permanent marker Drain pan Step by Step : 1 Remove the gas cap to relieve the fuel tank pressure. Set wheel chocks in front of and behind the passenger side tire. Place a rubber mat under the bed, just below the fuel door. 2 Lift the front driver's side of the vehicle by raising a jack under the frame and placing a jack stand under the lower control arm. Raise the driver's side rear wheel at the rear axle housing and place a jack stand under the shock mount on the axle housing. 3 Place a block of wood on the jack and raise it until it is resting against the fuel tank. Do not raise it higher as you may puncture the fuel tank. 4 Remove the fuel tank strap bolts with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet set. Lower the tank halfway to the ground and remove the electrical connections to the fuel pump at the top of the tank. 5 Mark and remove the three fuel lines that go into the pump with masking tape (A, B and C from left to right), so that you can reinstall them exactly the way they were removed. Remove the fuel filler neck hose. 6 Lower the fuel tank down onto the rubber mat. Gently pull the fuel tank out from under the vehicle to access the fuel pump. 7 Remove the fuel tank lock clip by tapping counterclockwise, with a hammer and screwdriver, on the protruding tabs. Remove the fuel pump. 8 Inspect the fuel tank for leaks. If the fuel tank shows any sign of leaking, this is the time to replace it. Inspect the new fuel filter and make sure it comes with a new screen. Putting an old screen on a new pump will ruin a brand new fuel pump. 9gloves image by dinostock from Fotolia.com Clean the tank surface with engine parts cleaner sprayed on a rag. Do not spray near the tank directly to avoid contaminating the fuel. Wipe only the top surface, being sure not to touch the side molded edges or the inside of the fuel pump hole. Wear gloves for this operation. Step by Step : 10 Install the new fuel pump into the fuel tank. Slide the fuel tank back onto the fuel tank straps. Lift the tank halfway using the piece of wood and the jack. Reassemble the fuel lines and the electrical connections to the fuel pump. Reconnect the fuel filler hose. Step by Step : 11 Lift the fuel tank all the way until it touches the bottom of the bed rails. Align the straps underneath the fuel tank. Tighten the fuel tank straps using 65 to 80 ft.-lbs. of torque. Tightening the tank straps will set the tank back where it was vertically. Shimmy the tank side to side to set it in the right horizontal position. Step by Step : 12 Reconnect the positive battery lead. Turn the ignition to "Accessories" (one click before start) then off again, three times in a row. This will prime the fuel lines and the engine with fresh fuel from the tank. Do not just crank on the key until the engine starts. This can cause ignition issues as well as internal engine problems. Tips & Warnings Never let your tank go below 1/4-full during the winter months. Moisture collects inside the fuel tank and causes damage to all parts of the fuel system. Fuel systems are made to handle petroleum-based products, not water. Clean your fuel injectors with a cleaner kit at least once every year. This will keep the top of the engine clean and prevent the spark plugs from being fouled as well. Changing your fuel filter every 20,000 miles can add to the life of your vehicle. You will also notice better fuel economy. Failure to wear hand protection, during this project, can result in severe lacerations, loss of limb or even death. Gasoline is an extremely flammable substance. Do not perform this project on hot asphalt, near open flames or anywhere that extreme heat or a spark could be emitted. Gasoline can cause severe irritation or burns to the skin. If gasoline contacts the skin, flush the area for five to 10 minutes under cold water. Use dish washing detergent to repel the gasoline off of the skin. If redness and irritation persist, contact your physician or seek medical treatment immediately. If gasoline comes into contact with the eyes, flush them under cold water for 15 to 20 minutes then seek medical attention immediately. Nail some boards together to form a ramp of the same height as AB in Step 1. Chapter 1: Things Every Driver Should Know Make sure that your flat tire is repaired properly. Instead of dismounting the tire from the wheel rim, inspecting it, fixing it, and remounting it, some ser vice stations simply plug the flat from the outside. Several states now outlaw this procedure, known as "outside-in" repair. To avoid this, tell the service facility that you don't want the tire plugged from the outside; you want the Suzuki . If you carry an aerosol can of nonflammable inflator/sealant, simply screw the nozzle of the can onto the valve stem of the flat tire, and it fills the tire with air and some sort of goo that temporarily seals the puncture. Because there's still some question about how permanent this fix is and its ultimate effects on your tire, use inflator/sealant only in emergencies, get to a service station as soon as possible, and ask the attendant to try to remove the stuff before fixing the tire.
